Ragga Caixa Break in the drum break
During the ragga drum break (the long sequence of 16 bars that is repeated twice), the below is what the caixas play the 2nd time the sequence is played. Demonstrated by section leader Sean in the centre. Ragga Kick Back 1 – call & response rep +Caixa
Ragga Part 2 – Surdos and Tams
Only surdos 1 & 2 play differently in Ragga part 2.
Ragga Kick Back 1
The beginning sequence of Ragga after the Repenique intro. (not technically a break, but clearer to include it here.)
- Comes before kick back 2 which then leads to the three break, which then leads into the Ragga main rhythm.
- All Surdos do the bom bom together and the rest of the band plays the third beat.
- What the surdos play together here is the same as what the nbr 1 surdo plays in the main rhythm of a Ragga.
Ragga Kick Back 2
The second part of the sequence leading up to the Ragga main rhythm. Signal is both arms in the air with thumbs pointing back over shoulders. Continue Reading →

Ragga – Youtube clip of band playing
This clip shows Tauranga Samba playing Ragga at the opening of Creative Tauranga’s new premises in 2008.
At the beginning of the clip the band is playing the main rhythm of Ragga.
Then Kick back 1 is signalled, then kick back 2 and then the three break to lead back into the rhythm.
