Salvador Samba reggae

Some cool repenique bits all the way through. I really like the bits from .35. – 1.00. A few elements to mix and match. Should be only one Repenique playing this with any other reps just keeping a steady pattern going.

Some Olodum Material

The repenique variations are the focus here – about .35 on. Really handy to hear these variations as part of leading into the number 3 surdos bu-bu-bu-bu that leads into the 1.

Whunkanui Repenique Entry

The notation below is valid from the .07 sec mark in the vid.

Also, down the page where it says “Call” under  “Whunkanui main groove” – thats the rep entry at .40sec mark. Note that you wont hear the first note played by the rep on the rim as it gets lost in the sound of the other instruments.

Another thing to note is that the first bar of the rep call is the same timing as what the surdos play in the first part of Whunkanui.

Repenique Samba Basics

Michael De Miranda explains the basics. If you like, you can skip to 4.10 in this video where he explains the most common pattern used for Samba. Mastering that is a good first step for a Repenique player.

Repenique for Samba

This ones a bit more advanced. Great vid with explanation of how the Rep fits in with the surdo 3. Also detailed explanation of open and muffled hand. And finally an additional rim shot added to the end.
